Free Trade Agreement (CPFTA)

ABOUT

Take your chef expertise from Lima to Toronto: Canada offers a streamlined work permit for you.

01

Under the Canada–Peru FTA, Peruvian citizens may obtain an LMIA-exempt work permit for certain skilled roles — meaning their Canadian employer may hire them without going through the Labour Market Impact Assessment process

Although many FTAs focus on “professionals/technicians,” the CPFTA coverage extends to selected technical or skilled occupations (including chefs) allowing streamlined hiring for Canadian employers.

02

You must be a Peruvian citizen, have a job offer in Canada for the eligible occupation (e.g., Chef NOC 62200), meet the education/training or equivalent work-experience requirements, and apply for the work permit under the LMIA-exempt category.

Common questions about the Friday ICAs

faq

What is the CPFTA work permit pathway for Peruvian chefs?
It’s a route under the Canada–Peru Free Trade Agreement that allows eligible Peruvian citizens to obtain a work permit for Canada without the employer needing an LMIA, for certain occupations such as chefs.
What are the employer’s obligations under this stream?

The Canadian employer must issue a job offer, register the offer through the employer portal (if required), and designate the correct LMIA-exemption code (for example T23) in the offer of employment.

Do I need a specific educational credential or work experience?
Yes — you will generally need post-secondary culinary education or equivalent training plus work experience to demonstrate you qualify as a skilled chef. The employer must show that you meet the job requirements.
Am I eligible if I don’t hold Peruvian citizenship?
No — this specific CPFTA route is for Peruvian citizens (or in some cases permanent residents, but the core beneficiary is citizens).
Does this pathway lead to permanent residence?
Not automatically. It provides a temporary work permit route. However, Canadian work experience gained can strengthen later immigration applications under other programs.
How long does the application take?
Processing times vary by visa office, completeness of application and other factors. The CPFTA sets a target of 45 days for complete applications in the “temporary entry” chapter.
Can I apply if I’m already working in Canada under another permit?
Possibly — you may need to change status or apply for a new permit under the CPFTA pathway. Each case is unique and you should check with a qualified advisor.
What happens after I arrive in Canada?
You must abide by the terms of your work permit (occupation, employer, location as indicated). You must maintain status, follow Canadian employment laws, and plan for your stay in Canada.
Can I bring my family with me?
Yes — depending on your permit type you may be able to include dependents or apply for accompanying family members. Their eligibility will depend on your status and their country of residence.
